Methyl Ethel release debut album

methyl ethelJake Webb from local band Meythyl Ethel chatted to OUTinPerth about their new album and making videos.

Tell us a little bit about ‘Oh, Inhuman Spectacle’, how has it been working on the album?
It was really good, it seems like it was a while ago even though it was only about 12 months since I first started it, it was sort of summer last year I went down to my parents property in Injidup and started working on songs…  songs that started out mostly on keyboards but then I changed it all up to guitar but it’s been nice to kind of have it all pressed and waxed and sign off on it.

You guys were featured on Unearthed last year, what was that like for you?
After Rogues was put out, I think people just seem to find something in that song that made them kind of want to find out a little bit more about the story of the band, so it’s been a nice little arc over the past 12 months.

Your music is quite ethereal and chilled out, is this your expression of Perth?

When I bury myself into my music, the textures sort of seem to come out themselves, the ones I feel suit and fit the most to the song that I’m working on seem to be how it turns out. It’s probably just a more sub conscious thing, but I suppose I would say yes!

The video for ‘Twilight Driving’ feels very familiar and nostalgic, it reminded me of growing up in Perth.

Yeah absolutely, far be it for me to really say explicitly what the song is about, but it’s exactly those sorts of reactions to it all. That’s where that song lives.

Did you create the video as well?

I contacted a guy about 8 months ago when I did the Rogues video, whose father had all this home video footage of the travels of his life. His father’s footage was amazing and it really seemed to fit those two songs. I just edited it together, but it was fun to be able to tell their story with the song.

Methyl Ethel’s debut album ‘Oh, Inhuman Spectacle’ is available now.
