Treasurer Scott Morrison has told ABC radio that he and people who oppose marriage equality face a similar level of hate speech and bigotry as the LGBTI community.

Responding to concerns raised yesterday by Labor Senator Penny Wong regarding the level of hate speech that might arise in the lead up to a plebiscite the Treasurer said people on both sides of the debate faced the same challenges.

“There are many in this country who have a different view to Penny, and to others, about what should happen with same sex marriage. I have a different view to that. Frankly people who have very strong religious views, they have also been subject to quite dreadful hate speech and bigotry as well.”

Morrison said people on both sides of the debate were being subjected to abusive comments.

The Treasurer said the government was fostering an inclusive approach by allowing every Australian to vote on the issue via a plebiscite.

This morning the Prime Minister said he still held “good faith” that the Australian people could hold a respectful debate on the issue.
