The 25-year-old series introduces the Yellow Ranger played by pop star Becky G as having “girlfriend problems”.

Director Dean Isrealite says Yellow Ranger Trini is questioning a lot about who she is in the movie.

“She hasn’t fully figured it out yet,” Isrealite told The Hollywood Reporter.

“I think what’s great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, ‘that’s OK’. The movie is saying, ‘that’s OK’ and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe.”

The news follows some controversy that the 2017 adaptation of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast will have an “exclusively gay moment” – leading to threats of a boycott in Alabama and censorship in Malaysia.

The original Blue Ranger from the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, out actor David Yost, has celebrated the news.

“So many people in the LGBTQI community are going to be excited to see that representation.”

Power Rangers hits Australian cinemas today.
