Local theatre identity Ivan King will be celebrated with a new Fringe World pop up venue named in his honour.

The iconic His Majesty’s Theatre will host a brand new pop-up performance space next February, created especially for the 2018 Fringe World Festival.

King’s Lair will be named in honour of Ivan King OAM, well known Perth theatre luminary, historian and archivist of the Performing Arts Museum at His Maj.

Producer of His Maj’s fringe program, Neville Sice, noted King’s work documenting Perth’s theatre history.

“As creator of Perth’s Museum of Performing Arts, Ivan has documented the stories of the city’s performing arts history in over 50 boutique exhibitions at His Majesty’s Theatre. Last year he was awarded the Order of Australia for services to the performing arts as an historian and archivist.”

King’s Lair will be located in a basement room not accessible to the public until now. The pathway to King’s Lair is part of the charm – audiences will walk through backstage passages through historic show memorabilia curated by its namesake.

Ivan King said he was thrilled with the honour.

“It’s real ‘Phantom Of The Opera’ territory down here. In fact I might display one of the elaborate gowns from that legendary show.”

Sice said the new pop up venue would be something very special.

“With its own bar, table seating, air conditioning and collection of historical and quirky historical theatre memorabilia, King’s Lair will be a hidden secret not to be missed.”

King’s Lair will complement Ace’s Cabaret which programs Downstairs at The Maj during Fringe.

“While we can’t announce the program until 7 December, expect a dynamic season of comedy, cabaret, magic and music,” Neville Sice said.
