Local artist dismantles time in space with Charged

Charged, by Tanja Visosevic explores time, through investigating death-row Prison films, specifically those that use the electric chair within their narrative; as a form of execution. Visosevic uses the exhibition space as a project room to explore time, experimenting with film and installation; dismantling of time in space.

Entering the room, where the door is closed behind us, some people are too scared to enter because of the subject matter, though there is no gore within the work.

Within various projections and objects utilising both contemporary and historic film and moving image techniques and apparatus, within individual elements of the whole installation.

Cut up archival footage from the early 20th century to the late 1980s are spliced repeated quartered reflected projected from above and below and within various apparatus.

Entering the Installation, the body is attracted to where it wants to go, we follow are flow where our inner camera our inner eye leads us. We are relaxed by the soundtrack of elevator music and the projection of disco wallpaper, a moving prison, a psychedelic visual dance projected onto the wall opposite the entry door, we are lost in time as we meditate on time; time trapped in time.

Isolation and separation within the prison are extreme, the prisoner is killing time rather than spending time; time within a prison differs to time on the outside. Suspension of the present and loss of time experienced in a confined space; accentuated and more horrific.

Employing the theories of Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze and Henri Lefebvre. Visosevic installation of experimental films examines suspension of the present, loss and control of time.
Lefebvre is best known for pioneering the critique of everyday life, Foucault’s theories primarily address the relationship between power and knowledge, Deleuze wrote on philosophy, literature, film, and fine art.

Within the installation, Visosevic refers to Deleuze’s theory of time-image and crystal image. An image infused with time, an image which is different from itself, which is virtual to itself, which is infused with past and future. The installation is beautiful mesmerising and electric.

Visosevic is an interdisciplinary artist, screen critic/theorist and educator. Employing technologies and strategies of the moving image, performance and bio-art, to examine cultural and philosophical terrains. Exploring Life and Death Instincts, Identity Politics and side effects spawned by New Technologies.
