Sydney’s Taylor Square is set for a colourful new fixture in honour of Sydney’s LGBTI+ community.

A rainbow crossing is set to be installed on the corner of Campbell and Bourke streets in the New South Welsh capital, to replace one that was suddenly removed in 2013.

Sydney’s Lord Mayor Clover Moore says the move makes a powerful statement.

“Our beautiful Oxford Street rainbow crossing became a global sensation in 2013 and it was devastating when it was removed with no warning in the middle of the night,” Moore said in a media statement.

“The news that it will be reinstated is incredibly significant on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras on June 24 and a powerful acknowledgement of the importance of our LGBTI community and history.”

Moore also thanked NSW Roads Minister Melinda Pavey and the Roads and Maritime Services for working with her council on the project.

Construction on the new crossing is due to begin this October.
