Victoria’s Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos announced yesterday that the government will be working with Thorne Harbour Health, Ballarat Community Health and Austin Health to improve health care for trans and gender diverse Victorians.

The Trans and Gender Diverse Health Care Initiative will set up dedicated, multi-disciplinary clinics in Ballarat and Preston, and offer state-wide training for health care providers in an Australian first.

“Our health services must be welcoming, safe and respectful places for everyone,” Mikakos said of the initiative.

“Trans and gender diverse Victorians deserve equal healthcare.”

Victorian Minister for Equality Martin Foley also noted that trans and gender diverse Australians experience higher rates of mental health issues, stigma and discrimination.

“[This is] why it is so important this initiative was co-designed by the community to meet their needs.”

The plan is part of a $3.4million package outlined in the 2018-19 Victorian Budget, committing to improve health services for the trans and gender diverse community. Another $1million is also assigned to a peer support program delivered in partnership with Transgender Victoria.
