Fremantle Heritage Festival 2007

Fremantle Heritage Festival

Beyond its Port heritage, Fremantle has long been known for its multiculturalism. The Gateway to WA, many new arrivals decided to look no further in their quest for a new home and settled in Fremantle becoming a part of the city’s culture. History shows early settlement of Celts, Italians, Dutch, Germans, Croatians, Polish, Turks, and of course, the traditional owners of the land – the Noongar people.

To celebrate this wonderful part of Fremantle’s heritage, for the first time the City of Fremantle will open the Festival with a Cultural Heritage Day. This FREE event offers people the opportunity to experience the diverse cultures within the Fremantle community.

The Fremantle Town Hall in Kings Square will play host to this event giving visitors the chance to taste the flavours of different cultures, see ethnic arts and crafts including displays, listen to traditional story telling. Or guests can simply just relax and enjoy the stage performances with Chillian, Croatian and El Salvadorian Folk Dancing, French melodies and the world music band – The Flying Carpathians.

The Official Opening of the 2007 Fremantle Heritage Festival by the City of Fremantle Mayor Peter Tagliaferri will take place at 11.15am in the Town Hall.

The celebration will continue until 4 June. During that time Fremantle will come alive with events, activities and awards that showcase the City’s diverse kaleidoscope of cultural, recreational, environmental and built heritage.

The 2007 Fremantle Heritage Festival is a unique opportunity to visit, see and hear about some of the amazing people and places that have helped shape Fremantle into the remarkable city it is today.

This year looks set to be another fascinating heritage encounter for people of all ages with a program full of things to see and do. Grab a program from the City Library or cafes around Fremantle or visit the web-site, but don’t miss it!
