It's a Wrap – Unwrapped: The Marketplace

On Sunday the 1st of April, Mends Street in South Perth was closed for Unwrapped: The Marketplace. Fashion, jewellery, and home wares were all a part of the goodies on display when OUTinPerth joined the thousands of people who took advantage of the mild autumn weather to go and check out Perth’s emerging designers at Unwrapped. We later caught up with event organiser Ebony Frost, to find out how the inaugural event went.

OiP: Were you happy with your first Unwrapped?

EF: I was very, very happy with the turnout. There were an estimated 10,000 people there on the day – so many that the ATMs even ran out of cash. Designers themselves were thrilled with the turnover mostly over $1000 ea. The mixture of the different styles worked really well – they were complementary but surprising at the same time. People were telling us it wasn’t predictable or stuff that they’d seen before which was nice… and the weather was just perfect!

OiP: Were there any standout designers?

EF: Most popular were probably the jewellery stalls like Neve and Sole; and Happy GoLucy shirts were walking out the door. There were also about ten student stalls, which represented about a quarter of all of the stalls, and the TAFE students sold a lot of things which was excellent.

OiP: What’s in the future for Unwrapped?

EF: We’re currently talking to people about partnering with different suburbs to spread Unwrapped around, but we’ll definitely continue with the annual fiesta in South Perth.
