A Malaysian MP has expressed her concerns over streaming service Netflix’s LGBT+ content while speaking in parliament this week.

Questioning the Communications Minister, Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid of the main opposition party (United Malays National Organisation) asked if Netflix fell under the same rules for censorship as cinema releases.

Authorities recently cut over 20-minutes of content from Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, and considered removing a scene from the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast which showed a character’s coming out.

Yazid said she is “seeing widespread sex scenes and LGBT elements which are causing worry among the people,” Malaysiakini reported.

Politicians using their platform to speak out against the LGBTI+ community is not uncommon in the South East Asian nation.

Earlier this month Malaysia’s Tourism Minister Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi told German media that homosexuality does not exist in his country, while last year Prime Minister Mohamad Mahathir dismissed LGBT+ rights as “western values” arguing that was no need to consider them in Malaysia.

Homosexuality is against the law in Malaysia, carrying a maximum punishment of up to 20 years in prison.
