Actors Nathan Lane and Andrew Garfield have both collected trophies early in the evening for their roles in Tony Kushner’s stirring exploration of queer life and the impact of HIV in the 1980s – Angels In America.

Garfield was awarded Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for his portrayal of Prior Walter, while Lane has picked up his third acting Tony for his part as Roy Cohn.

Others celebrating include Roseanne’s Laurie Metcalf for Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women, director John Tiffany for his work on Harry Potter and the Cused Child, Parts One and Two, and choreographer Justin Peck for Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel.

Triple threat Chita Rivera and the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber will both be honoured during the ceremony with Lifetime Achievement awards, while Bruce Springsteen and actor John Leguizamo will take home special Tonys for their smash-hit show, Springsteen on Broadway.
