Swinburne University of Technology, Federation University Australia and Deakin University have developed an online wellbeing program aimed specifically at gay and lesbian youth aged 18-25.

The program entitled Out & Online was funded by beyondblue and is based on scientifically tested psychological treatments and designed to improve mental wellbeing and reduce symptoms of anxiety.

Lead researcher, Dr Jo Abbott from the National eTherapy Centre (NeTC) at Swinburne, commented on the need for mental health resources for lesbian, gay and bisexual youth.

“Research has shown that same-gender attracted young adults experience higher rates of mental health problems when compared to their opposite-gender attracted peers.

“This has been strongly linked to experiences of discrimination resulting from homophobic attitudes present within the wider community. These problems are intensified for gay and lesbian youth living in rural areas, where access to relevant information, resources and services can be even more challenging,” said Dr Abbott.

The program is available free of charge and is part of a research trial aiming to provide quality mental health resources for gay and lesbian youth. Once feedback for the program is acquired, it will be made part of Swinburne University’s online mental health clinic, Mental Health Online.

Same sex attracted adults aged from 19-25 can participate in the trial or find more information at www.outandonline.org.au
