Queensland ALP for marriage equality

At the Queensland state conference of the Australian Labor Party a motion has been passed calling on both federal Labor and the ALP National Conference to support same sex marriage.

Alex Greenwich, National Convener of Australian Marriage Equality, welcomed the motion saying ‘momentum continues to build towards the decision that most Australians want the ALP National Conference to deliver in December in favour of full marriage equality.’

Last year Queensland Premier and National President of the ALP Anna Bligh voiced her support for national marriage equality. Queensland follows South Australia and Tasmania in changing the state party’s position on the issue. Recently at the Victorian state conference the issue was not decided after a quorum was not achieved. The change in position was also recently supported by the ALP’s Women’s Network. The Western Australian conference will be held later this month.
