The Murdoch Theatre Company have something for kids this school holidays. Written by Katherine Peterson and directed by Nic Doig – it’s a new take on a classic tale. Patrick Truman-Healy went along to the opening night to check it out.

A musical of treasure island, huh?
Gender swapping characters, huh?
Somehow able to include a lap dance yet continue to be a kids show, huh?
Lollies thrown into the audience, huh?
Okay, tell me more…

Welcome to the port of Fremantle, where young Jamie Hawkins is ready to begin her journey for treasure. She’s only told a trusted few of her secret, and the captain-sorry!-admiral has promised to cross his fart and hope to lie…What could possibly go wrong?

Stand out performances go to Hawkins’ mother, who’s joyous portrayal had the crowd roaring, and would be welcome at any drag factory, Mama Kura, protector of the mysterious treasure, and the afore-mentioned admiral, who’s physical antics were most impressive.

Nic Doig’s direction has always been imaginative and full of comedic timing, and this show is another example. There’s something rewarding when a joke, or even a look, pays off.

Two pieces of advice: the show would benefit from a younger audience. The few children I saw in the audience had a great time, and left beaming. It would be great to have more of that excited energy in the theatre. Especially during the moments of audience interaction.

In regards to the singing, it was difficult to hear any of the voices above the piano. Microphones or bigger voices would have been appreciated.

Treasure Island: A Musical Pantomime is a fantastical adventure to be had for audiences young and old. It’s a fresh, zany show packed with jokes and ideas. Despite lacking strong vocals, you and your child can leave with a smile on your face.

Treasure Island: A Musical Pantomime is at the Nexus Theatre at Murdoch University, 7:00 pm from the 5-7th of July. A matinee is on at 2:00 pm on the 7th.
