Ranging from the sentimental lead single ‘Three Little Letters’ to fist-pump soul with ‘Walking These Streets’ and the sweet soulful mid-tempo number ‘Joy’ through to a stunning rendition of Coldplay’s ‘Magic’ – the album traverses a range of styles that meld seamlessly together to take the listener on an enjoyable journey.

“I was a little bit sad to leave the studio”, Clisby shared, “I wanted to stay, but I’m very happy with the way it came out, I’m very pleased.”

Clisby and his team spent 41 days in the studio creating the new record which features a mix of new songs and covers of other artist’s sings including works by Plan B, Coldplay and Paloma Faith.

“I worked with some of the guys that I usually play with, members of my band,” Clisby said. “I also got to work with the drummer that I really wanted, Jason Heerah, who is on ‘X-Factor’ at the moment, he’s a singer but he’s also an unbelievable good drum player.”

One of the songs on the album that has been the most downloaded in the albums first few days of release is Clisby’s cover of Paloma Faith’s hit ‘Only Love Can Hurt Like This’. The tune was written by mega-supremo songwriter Dianne Warren. Clisby explains how he chose which tunes to cover on the album.

“We had some suggestions – song choice is one of the most important things you can do on a project. We had to find some songs were not typical ‘after reality show tracks’ and we wanted to do something a little more fresh, something that people would not expect.

“I have an affinity for UK-centric pop-soul tunes, I think there’s a legitimacy there, it’s slightly less predictable than the American scene… it’s got a little more edge to it that the homogenised American sound.”

While many people who come to prominence through TV programs quickly fade from memory once the camera stops rolling, Clisby has successfully stayed in the spotlight. The singer suggests that the attitude you have when you head onto a reality TV show is a key factor.

“I think it has a lot to do with the strategy you have when you go into those shows. A lot of people go in with the idea – which is an illusion – that you get on TV a couple of times and that’s going to make your career. That’s an insane concept.” Clisby said, breaking into a chuckle.

“If you know the business, you know that’s not the way it is. You have to know what part that plays in the big picture and you have to have an idea of how to make that work you. It’s a component that you can use to propel your self to a more successful situation. I had a following before I went on ‘The Voice’ and it was an exercise in expanding that audience,” Clisby said, ‘There were no guarantees of success.”

Next up the singer is out on the road taking the album out to his growing legion of fans. While he doesn’t currently have any Western Australian dates book the singer said he’s eager to make the trip across the Nullabor to share his new work.

Steve Clisby’s album ‘Leave Me Dreaming’ can be downloaded from iTunes.
