National Press Club to hold marriage equality debate: Bernardi v Wong

Wong BernardiThe National Press Club today revealed it will host a debate on marriage equality in Australia later this month.

LGBTIQ rights, particularly the right to marry, have been a key point of political and public discourse – particularly since the recent events in Ireland and the United States.

The debate will see South Australian Senators Penny Wong and Cory Bernardi face each other on the stage, both of whom have been vocal and clear of their respective views in the public arena.

Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi has represented South Australia since 2006, carrying with him his experience as an investment portfolio manager and entrepreneur. Senator Bernardi is also the founder of the Conservative Leadership Foundation, a non-profit organisation which aims to teach future Australian leaders the principles of “personal responsibility, free enterprise and traditional values”.

Labor Senator Penny Wong has been a member of the Senate since 2001, taking on varies roles including Minister for Climate Change and Water, Minister of Finance and Deregulation, Leader of the Government (and the Opposition) in the Senate. Senator Wong is currently holds the title of Shadow Minister for Trade and Investment, as well as continuing as Labor’s Senate leader. Wong is a proud member of the LGBTIQ community, who lives with her partner and daughter in Adelaide.

The National Press Club have scheduled the debate for Wednesday 29th July, 12:30pm EST.
