Poland to Legalise Civil Unions

Despite rampant opposition from conservatives, Poland is moving towards legalising commitment ceremonies for the LGBT community.

The legislation will be passed by Poland’s ruling centre-right party, Platforma Obywatelska.

Although the East European country has no plans to legalise gay marriage, such steps have been seen as a significant move towards equality for the Polish LGBT community.

The new bill fails to introduce adoption rights for same-sex couples; plans to develop equal tax laws for gay de facto couples have also been scrapped.

The bill has been opposed by Polish Justice Minister Jaroslaw Gowin – who believes the Civil Unions will undermine the institute of marriage.
