The parade was the city’s first since homosexuality was recriminalised in India under section 377 of India’s Penal Code.

The city’s seventh annual pride parade, the parade was entitled the Queer Azaadi March, (“Azaadi” being Hindu for “freedom”) and gave LGBT citizens the opportunity to protest the 150 year old law.

The law, which was overturned in 2009 only to be reinstated in December 2013, states that “Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.”

Pictures of the parade are available at Al Jazeera.
