Italian bar criticised for making gay version of The Last Supper

A bar in Salerno Italy has been asked to cancel it’s weekly gay night after people took offence at it’s promotional poster for their weekly night DiverCity. The advert depicted a gay version of The Last Supper.

Leonardo Da Vinci’s The Last Supper show Jesus eating with his disciples, the alternative version used in the poster depicted him as a bare chested man covered in tattoos, while some of his disciples were getting intimate.

The local branch of political party Forzo Italia called on organisers to cancel to event.

“The organizers are neither blasphemous, nor ‘alternative’ but simply misplaced and disrespectful,” said Forza Italia’s Fabio Mammone.

The call was backed up by members of  the Catholic Popolo della Famiglia group who said the advert was “slaughtering respect and good taste”.

The organisers of the event said they had no plans to cancel and urged supporters of the event to attend.

DaVinci’s Last Supper painting has often been recreated in popular culture. TV shows The SopranosLost, House and Battlestar Galactica have all recreated the iconic image.

While it was also the focus of the cover of OUTinPerth’s Pride edition a few years ago. Photographer Angelo di-Benedetto captured members of Perth’s queer scene for our October 2012 edition.

In our version Jesus was played by drag queen Anna Mation.
