He is one of the most respected advocates for Australian film on the global stage, and in this series he brings great observations from both his personal experience and the journey  of the Australian film industry.

The series kicks off with an exploration of the films which have been game-changers, driving forward innovation in storytelling and style. The journey explores Picnic at Hanging Rock, Strictly Ballroom, Jedda, Turkey Shoot, Samson and Delilah and Shine.

The second part focusses on stories of outsiders, taking in Muriel’s Wedding, They’re a Weird Mob, The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. As well as exploring the new ‘black wave’ of Australian filmmaking.

The third episode tackles how we depict families and tribes. In this episode The Castle, Head On, The Devil’s Playground, Romper Stomper and others are put under the microscope.

The series features interviews with a cavalcade of the biggest names in the Australian film industry including Stephan Elliott, Tony Ayres, Christos Tsiolkas, Nicole Kidman, Bryan Brown, Jackie Weaver and countless others.

This a deeply insightful series that explores who we are through the films we’ve loved, it’s a captivating presentation.

David Straton’s Stories of Australian Cinema begins 8:30pm Tuesday on ABC.
