Love Letters: Peter and Sam celebrate 15 years together

The opponents of marriage equality have claimed that the survey on marriage equality is about everything from education programs, to freedom of speech, to fighting political correctness.

We know that the call for equality is simply just recognising the love between two people, and their desire the formalise that commitment before their friends and families.

As we fight for the right to be able to get married to our loved ones, we’re sharing stories of LGBTI couples, and we want you to send us your story, like many couples have already done.

Meet Peter, Sam and their son Roman.

Who are you?

Peter, Roman (middle) & Sam.

How did you meet?

We first met on the internet site Gaydar back in 2002. We were talking to each other online for a couple of months before we actually met in person. I was out with a heap of my friends for my birthday and Peter turned up by himself to finally meet which I thought was awesome. After that we started dating and travelling between Sydney and Wollongong before finally moving in together. In 2008 we moved to Western Australia to live in Tom Price.

How long have you been a couple?

Peter and I will be celebrating our 15 year anniversary in November.

What’s your favourite thing about each other?

Peter: I have always enjoyed his wit, charm and his positivity. Sam always tries to find the best of any situation and make light of it if possible. He strives to make everyone feel good. He is a wonderful father to our son Roman.

Sam: I love how selfless Pete is. He always puts the concerns and feelings of others before his own. That is a very strong characteristic and a wonderful one. I also love how he puts up with my silliness that borders on stupidity at times. He is an amazing father to Roman.

What has been a big moment in your relationship?

The big moment is our relationship was definitely bringing our son Roman into the world and into our lives via surrogacy in Thailand.

Roman is an amazing boy and brings joy and laughter into our lives every day. We couldn’t imagine life without him now, we feel complete.

Why do you want to see marriage equality in Australia?

I’ve always jokingly said for years that we deserve to be just as miserable as married couples.

Seriously though, there are many reasons I want to see marriage equality in Australia. Obviously so we can stand alongside our friends and family that have been able to marry.

It’s also important to be legally recognised so we can act on and make decisions for each other should one of us become incapacitated in any way.

Most importantly I believe us being married would ‘legally’ allow Pete to be recognised as Romans father allowing him to make any decisions on Romans behalf should I not be around.

How do you foresee your wedding day?

I foresee it in Las Vegas. In a chapel and married by an Elvis impersonator, or one of those drive through weddings they have. Quick and easy then off to a Cirque du Soleil show.

Peter on the other hand I’m sure would have something else planned entirely.
