Another Gay Movie: A Spoof for Poofs

Another Gay MovieIf you missed Another Gay Movie in the theatres, then this month you have the chance to catch it on DVD. Is the gay spoof of the classic teen comedy American Pie worth renting? Three OUT in Perth reviewers tell you what they think.

RS: The movie was a curate’s egg—good in some parts, but terribly bad in others. Some of the most entertaining parts of the film come from the four main male characters coming to terms with their naivete of gay life, invariably colliding with some of the underlying stereotypes. Ultimately, these characters move beyond their own view of the stereotypes of gay men in a quite satisfying and positive ending. While the movie challenges and explores some of the shallow stereotypes about gay men, it does a horrendous job in portraying a lesbian character using extremely negative stereotypes which were ultimately bordering on offensive.

In 3 words: Good sans lesbian-bashing.

MS: Personally, when American Pie came out in 1999, I just didn’t get it. People quoted the movie until I developed a nervous twitch around warm apple pie. With the exception of the now-ubiquitous MILF reference, the movie seemed to offer very little creativity, humour, or entertainment. After seeing Another Gay Movie I am once again forced to ask myself if the art form of subtle wit has gone extinct. If AGM, like its predecessor wanted to be as in your face with as many flagrant stereotypes as possible, then it succeeded. And if that is funny, then I, by and large, missed the joke.

In 3 words, Was that necessary?

DC: Look if it wasn’t so boring, I would forgive it for not being very funny. And if it was funny, I’d forgive it for being obnoxiously stereotypical and offensive. It was about as funny as a tooth abscess. I know I have no sense of humour and am a boring git, but despite the fact that it is clearly a spoof, it bugs me because so many in our community suffer from homophobia from people who believe these kinds of stereotypes. And the cheesy we’re one big happy family promotion? Oh please. If I had to choose between Another Gay Movie or American Pie, I’d take a blackout.

In 3 words, I’d rather barf.
