The first four seasons of the post apocalyptic zombie series has been largely devoid of gay characters, a depiction it has been criticised for.

Now in an interview with GQ magazine actor Norman Reedus, who portrays the popular character Daryl Dixon has said that he’s been playing the character as if he was gay for several seasons now.

Reedus has described how original show runner Frank Darabont pitched the idea to him at a party in LA after the first season of the show had wrapped. The star says his character is gay but in denial.

The Walking Dead returns to television screens in October for it’s fifth season, when we left the show most the characters were trapped in a  rail car after being ambushed by the residents of new town Terminus.

Earlier this month it was announced that a companion series set in the same universe would also begin filming.
