Eleven of Perth’s religious leaders have come together to sign a joint statement in support of marriage equality, calling on the federal government to move forward on equality.
The joint statement was coordinated by the Rector of the Anglican Parish of Darlington-Bellevue, Rev Chris Bedding with an event this morning at the Anglican Parish in Subiaco.
The Equality Campaign Executive Director Tiernan Brady says its important that the majority voice of people of faith in support of marriage equality should be heard.
“Marriage equality is a civil institution and will have no impact on anyone’s faith, any religious institution or sacrament,” Brady said.
“It is about allowing the state to treat every Australian with dignity.”
“Religious supporters back marriage equality because of their faith not in spite of it. Underpinning this faith is respect for everyone, dignity and strong family values of love and commitment,” Brady continued.
“It is wonderful to see the ever growing number of faith leaders having their voices heard coming out to support marriage equality.”
Rev Bedding added that marriage equality will provide access to marriage to those who yearn for it, and won’t stop people of faith from framing their own lives around their own beliefs.
“Marriage requires constant generosity and sacrifice for another person,” Rev Bedding said.
“I value marriage so highly that I want all couples to be able to experience the level of love that marriage demands.”
Rev Bedding was joined by ten other faith leaders in signing the statement, including Abbot and Spiritual Director of the Jizoan Zen Temple Reverend Venerable Mujyo Williams, Reverend Dr Ian Tozer of Uniting Church Australia and Reverend Craig Collas of Wesley Uniting Church.
“A majority of Australians support marriage equality and a large portion of them are people of faith,” Tiernan Brady said.
“The last hurdle for this important issue is for the Australian government to recognise and act on the will of the Australian people. It is time to legislate for marriage equality with a vote in parliament.”
“Fairness and equality are at the heart of Australian society. We are promoting some of the greatest human values – love, respect and happiness.”
