The Potbelleez: Taking Junkyard House on Tour

The Potbelleez The Potbelleez are a dynamic duo, like Batman and Robin, but with a good dose more debauchery and attitude. Comprised of Irishmen Dave Goode and Jonny Sonic, the Potbelleez were born in Darling Harbour, Sydney, when the two DJs spun a set together at the Moulin Rouge, an underground club in Sydney’s red light district. They have been working together ever since, rapidly building a following of hot and sweaty dance fanatics in Australia and abroad with musical stylings they describe as ‘influenced by hip hop, trance, techno… we just call it junkyard house’.

Dave and Jonny and their junkyard house have hosted parties for Groove Armada and spun shows everywhere from Romania to Ireland to Shanghai. So far, however, they remained largely an underground phenomenon. With the release of their debut EP ‘In the Junkyard’ on May 19th, the two turn table junkies are set to break into the mainstream of Australian dance. The EP features ‘Junkyard’ a track that reached number 2 on the ARIA Club Charts this past January.

Despite the EP release, it is the live stage where Dave and Jonny have sweated and sweated some more to make names for themselves. As Jonny and Dave told OUT in Perth, ‘It has been a road we’ve traveled for the last 5 or 6 years. We have done everything in the past to get to this point right here. We have been working our asses off all our f*cking lives’.

Has all the late nights of sweaty action been worth it? ‘It is bloody good fun. It is what we were born to do. It is something we surrender to. If something is calling you strong, you just got to go and do it and push through all the barriers. It comes from the heart with us two’.

The Potbelleez are touring Australia throughout April and May. Those who want a preview of the Potbelleez, check out their myspace page. If you like what you hear, you can enter to win one of OUTinPerth’s giveaway tickets for their April 27th show at the Metropolis.
