Senator Bernardi Criticised by Colleagues

Cory BernardiConservative Senator Cory Bernardi (pictured) has been criticised by his own Liberal Party colleagues after he delivered a lengthy speech in defense of the nuclear family during a party room meeting.

In a closed door party room meeting Senator Bernardi reportedly delivered a lengthy speech praised family services Minister Kevin Andrews for an opinion piece he wrote for ‘The Australian’ newspaper. Senator Bernardi joked that the Minister should be careful promoting traditional views as he had been ridiculed for comments he made in his book ‘The Conservative Revolution’.

Liberal National Party member Ewan Jones denounced Mr Bernardi’s views sharing his own experiences as a single father. Mr Jones said the most important thing is that children are loved. Speaking later to reporters Mr Jones said it was not the role of the government to talk down same sex families.

Speaking to The Australian newspaper Mr Jones shared his thoughts;

“I have been a single dad myself and the traditional family model is fantastic but my position has always been it’s not the gender or the sexual orientation of the role models.

“Most of the children in Queensland youth detention centres have got a mum and a dad it’s just that they aren’t much chop.

“It’s the quality of the parent and that’s what I stood up for,” said Senator Jones.

In his book Senator Bernardi claimed that children from single parent families have a high level of criminality. The senator was relegated to the back bench in 2012 after he claimed that same sex marriage would lead to bestiality.
