The A List

Throw out the red carpet in June because it is a winter wonderland of musical events…

The Rosemount Hotel and WAAPA combine forces every week for Friday Evening Jazz from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Yes, glide into the weekend with some of the smoothest and sultriest sounds around as the Rosemount Hotel explodes with a cavalcade of New York inspired notes shaking this legendary pub to its very roots.

Get your highbrow on as the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) bring you A Hero’s Life on June 13 and 14 at the Perth Concert Hall. This night will see both Strauss and Wagner belt out across the hall. Australian soprano Nicole Youl joins WASO for Wagner’s delicate song cycle of love, Wesendonck.

It’s time to get a little smokin’. No, not in that nasty yellow nicotine stain manner – ugh, how common and vulgar! No, rather smokin’ in a scintillating, tearing up the floor manner. Yes, dance is about to hit Perth in a scorching manner as Tango Fire burns across the floor of His Majesty’s Theatre from June 20 to June 22. This company comes direct from Buenos Aires and features 10 sensational dancers, all accompanied by one of Argentina’s finest singers and a quartet of brilliant musicians.

WASO returns to the Perth Concert Hall on June 20 and 21 with Romantic Rachmaninov, as does the seminal talent that is Alexev Yemtsov, who will delight audiences with a ménage a trois of Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and Glazunov. The evening also features Alexander Lazarev conducting WASO through Glazunov’s beautiful architectural poem, his Fifth Symphony.

For those who seek a little culture you can’t go further than… well, Kulcha. This haven of all things multicultural delivers yet again with Ajak Kwai and Band. This Sudan raised artist delivers a night of deeply philosophical yet ultimately uplifting songs as she explores love, peace, freedom and… cows? Yes, get a moo-ve on to Kulcha on Friday, June 13 at 8pm.

Looking for something a little blue to colour your soul? Then join Parisian songstress Pascale and internationally renowned blues artist Rick Steele as they flirt their way through cabaret, jazz and, of course, the blues. Together this dynamic duo are sure to ignite Kulcha as they set their voices to stun on June 15 at 7pm.
