Thus Tuesday night on SBS, the network’s topical affairs and debate program, ‘Insight’ will be covering the topic of surrogacy.

Surrogacy is an option that some same sex parents use to start families, although commercial surrogacy is illegal in Australia, meaning that a surrogate can only be used if the person in question volunteers without payment.

This means that some parents, who may wish to use a surrogate for a variety of reasons, if they are unable to find an altruistic surrogate, pay women overseas in countries such as India and Thailand.

The program will feature a number of guests with different surrogacy experiences: a woman who acted as an altruistic surrogate for her sister, who was born without a uterus, a woman who decided to act as an altruistic surrogate for her friends’ and was told to abort the pregnancy at 12 weeks due to the possibility of a chromosomal disorder with the fetus, a woman who used an overseas commercial surrogate and an author who campaigns against surrogacy because she believes it turns women into “breeders”.

‘Insight’ screens tomorrow night on SBS at 8.30. Watch the preview below.
