Trans woman Tara Hudson has been moved to a female prison after it was reported she had been sentenced to serve time in an all-male prison last week.
PinkNews have reported that Ms Hudson’s mother has confirmed that Tara Hudson has been moved to an all-female facility.
The UK’s current procedure is for transgender prisoners to procure a Gender Recognition Certificate to be assigned to a prison for their correct gender. Ms Hudson did not have the correct documentation, which can be difficult and costly to obtain.
Conservative MP and Justice and Equalities Minister Caroline Dinenage spoke before the Woman and Equalities Select Committee on the issue, stressing the need for reform in this area.
“The absolutely fundamental underlying concern is the safety of that prisoner and indeed the safety of the wider prison population as well,” Ms Dinenage said.
