Freedman-Gurspan made history last year when she became the first openly trans staff member at the White House, becoming outreach and recruitment director in the President’s personnel office.

Ms Freedman-Gurspan has had a long history as an advocate for the LGBTI community, working as policy adviser for the National Center for Transgender Equality – leading the racial and economic justice initiative with a focus on trans people of colour.

Senior vice president for policy and political affairs for the Human Rights Campaign JoDee Winterhof has praised the appointment.

“We believe it is a tremendous decision by the White House to recognise Raffi’s leadership as well as the importance of having transgender leadership in an important role for the community.”
