Review | Effie: The Virgin Bride at Perth Comedy Festival

Effie The Virgin Bride | The Regal Theatre | ★★★★

Since 1989 Melbourne grown actress and comedian Mary Coustas has been delivering the character of Effie to Australian audiences in her distinctive language mangling style.

Trading on Effie’s usual repartee of Greek/Australian cultural collision that’s peppered with historical observations such as “Greeks invented homosexuality and lesbianism… you’re welcome”.

Coustas takes the audience on a hilarious one woman journey through the process of a Big Fat Greek Wedding. She travels down a road informed by stories of Greek mothers, unfussy bridesmaids and catered by Wham Bam Thankyou Lamb.

So if you want to crack a Yasser Arafat over a mix of broad humour, catchphrases that will have you at “hello good thanks” and “how embarrassment”, with a final act that packs a surprisingly heartfelt punch.

Perth Comedy Festival runs until Sunday May 21st. Tickets and more information available from perthcomedyfest.com.au
