“I am so excited to be joining the cast and crew of ‘The Crown’ and to have the opportunity to portray such a complicated and controversial woman,” Anderson said in a tweet.  “Thatcher was undoubtedly formidable but I am relishing exploring beneath the surface and dare I say, falling in love with the icon who, whether loved or despised, defined an era.”

It’ll be awhile before audiences get to see Anderson portray the Iron Lady, the third season of the show is scheduled to drop on 17th November, so expect her to appear on the Netflix show in late 2020.

The next series of the show will include a complete cast change to allow the characters age into their forties and beyond. Queen Elizabeth will be portrayed by Oscar winner Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies from Game of Thrones takes over the part of Prince Philip and Helena Bonham-Carter will play the Queen’s sister Princess Margaret.

Also joining the show is Law and Order UK star Ben Daniels who will play Anthony Armstrong-Jones, and Emerald Fennell from Call the Midwife who will play Camilla Shand – who is now the Duchess of Cornwall.

Gillian Anderson fans won’t have to wait all the way to the end of 2020 to see her back on TV screens, the actor has also signed on for a second outing of the Netflix series Sex Education.
