Senator Cory Bernardi to finish political career before the end of the year

South Australian Senator Cory Bernardi will announce his resignation from parliament and end his political career during the next fortnight, according to the Adelaide Advertiser.

Senator Bernardi became an independent when he wound up his Australian Conservatives political party following a dismal showing at the federal election.

As he was originally elected to the parliament as a Liberal member he will be replaced by a nominee put forward by his former party, bolstering the government’s numbers. The Morrison government only has a majority of one member at the moment, and the election of Victorian MP Gladys Liu is currently being challenged in court.

The Adelaide Advertiser says Senator Bernardi has already told family and friends of his intention to announce his resignation on the last day of parliament for the year.

The conservative senator was first elected to parliament in 2006. He has been a vocal opponent of Islam, same sex marriage, abortion and has campaigned for the ABC to be funded at a significantly lower level.
