Trailblazing comedian Bob Smith dies aged 59

Comedian Bob Smith passed away on Saturday at is home in New York from complications related to Motor Neuron Disease.

Smith was the first gay comedian to get his own HBO half hour comedy special which aired in 1994, and was the first gay comedian to appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Smith also wrote several books and was one of the writers on the TV show Roseanne, as well as writing for Dennis Miller, the MTV Movie Awards and MADTV.

He got his big break in the entertainment industry as one third of ‘Funny Gay Males’, a trio of comics, also including Danny McWilliams and Jaffe Cohen.

Smith is survived by his partner, Michael Zam — the co-creator of FX’s Feud: Bette and Joan — and his children, Madeline and Xander.
