MP Argues That It's OK to Ask About Sexuality in Job Interviews

David LDavid Leyonhjelm, the senator elect for the Liberal Democrats will take his place in the Senate on July 1st and is set to be a key figure in Australian politics holding the balance of power in the upper house.

This week it has been revealed that the Senator has been asking prospective candidates for the role of media adviser in his office if they are gay.

Although it’s illegal to discriminate against people on the basis of sexuality, including heterosexuality, the Senator Elect begs to differ.

“F… that. I will ask whoever I want if they are gay,’’ Leyonhjelm told the Daily Telegraph. Leyonhjelm said he was supportive of gay people and was in favour of employing a gay person to be his media adviser.

Leyonhjelm said he didn’t understand why gay people were so interested in marriage, sharing his view that all marriages should be a private exercise, not involving the state.

The Senator Elect also opened up his Twitter account this week and offered a bizarre first tweet,

Is approval of gay lifestyle necessary to support gay rights? Is reckless promiscuity a right? Tolerance doesn’t require approval.”

As several people on Twitter replied, let’s hope he finds a media adviser soon.
