LGBTI rights advocates seek your opinion on religion exemptions for schools

Advocacy group just.equal is seeking the LGBTI community’s views on the issue of LGBTI students and teachers in faith-based schools. The group says it is important for the community to give guidance on key questions raised by the Government’s leaked bill.

Spokesperson, Ivan Hinton-Teoh said they wanted to find out what LGBTI Australians thought about the current laws.

“We are asking LGBTI Australians whether or not discrimination on the new grounds of “religious ethos” is acceptable and whether or not teachers as well as students should be protected from discrimination.”

“We will provide the results to all federal politicians to better inform the coming parliamentary debate.”

“We are committed to ensuring the voice of LGBTI community is heard when there are critical decisions to be made about legislation affecting our future.”

Mr Hinton-Teoh encouraged LGBTI people to take the survey, which can be accessed here.

In 2016 and 2017 just.equal worked with other groups, including PFLAG and Rainbow Families, to survey the LGBTI community regarding its views on a marriage equality plebiscite and concessions to religious freedom in the marriage legislation. Those surveys were the largest of their kind in Australian history.
