Quinto announced he was gay in 2011 following the death of American teenager Jamey Rodemeyer.

At the time Quinto said; “that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality.”

For the US version of the series the action is relocated from suburban Australia to the streets of Brooklyn. Christos Tsoilkas’ 2008 novel was a best-seller in Australia and was made into a successful Australian TV series in 2011.

Joining Quinto is the US version of the story will be ‘Weeds’ star Mary-Louise Parker as Annouk, Peter Sarsgaard will play Hector and Brian Cox is set to portray family patriarch Manolis. There’s no word yet on who’ll be taking on the role of gay best friend Ritchie.

Tony Ayres who produced and directed the Australian series is attached to the US production as a producer. Jon Robin Baitz, who wrote the successful TV series ‘Brothers and Sisters’ is writing new scripts for the American version.
