Canadian PM Justin Trudeau will apologise to LGBTI citizens for past injustices

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his government will make a formal apology to LGBTQ2 citizens for past injustices.

“On November 28, the Government will offer a formal apology to LGBTQ2 Canadians in the House – for the persecution & injustices they have suffered, and to advance together on the path to equality & inclusion,” Trudeau said on Twitter.

The apology will be focus on people who were arrested for being gay prior to the decriminalisation of homosexuality, those who were forced to leave the military and people who were fired from their government jobs.

State governments in Australia have also made similar apologies. Western Australia’s Premier Mark McGowan made a formal apology in early November. At the same time legislation was introduced to expunge historical convictions.
